About the local area
LOCAL AREA INFORMATION
Carcassonne has been the backdrop to a number of films such as 'Robin Hood - Prince of Thieves' and is the setting for 'Labyrinthe' the successful novel by Kate Mosse. The medieval city is indeed a fairytale location with lots to see and do, with festivals in July and August each year, concerts by top stars, and a fabulous firework display on Bastille Day, the 14th July.
An all year round destination, in December, in the Bastide St Louis, there's a great Christmas market. The Canal du Midi also passes through the town offering the opportunity for walks or a boat trip on this fascinating waterway built in the mid-1600's.
The bastide area of Carcassonne is full of interesting architecture and is rich in history dating from the 13th century. Just relax and have a coffee or a glass of wine in the sun-drenched main square enjoying the French art de vivre.
Activities: You can swim in the public outdoor swimming pool open in the summer months - it's just a short walk away.
There's also the 'Lac de la Cavayere', a lake with a beach that's safe for swimming and nature reserve - it takes approximately 10-15 minutes by bus to get there.
Strolling or cycling along the Canal du Midi watching the boats pass by is very enjoyable. Carcassonne also has a golf course if you fancy a round of golf.
Sightseeing: Your can certainly spend lots of time in the City itself visiting the Chateau Comtal, the ramparts, the Museums etc. If you are hiring a car, the Mediterranean beaches are less than 1 hour's drive away. They can also be reached by train to Narbonne and then by bus to the coastal resorts.
In the region around Carcassonne you can also visit the Cathar castles, Rennes-le-Chateau, the medieval towns of Foix and Mirepoix, the giant caves at Cabrespine and Limousis, the Montagne Noir, and area of outstanding natural beauty, and the fantastic African nature reserve at Sigean.
Market: Carcassonne has a great market, full of colourful, local produce in Place Carnot on a Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday
Restaurants: There are many in the city to suit all budgets and tastes. Joie de Vivre can make some recommendations for you.
Supermarket and Shopping: The local supermarket is a 5-minute drive away and, for the ladies, both the bastide area of Carcasonne and the medieval city have some lovely, interesting and individual shops.
The apartment was everything we expected and we were very satified. The location was perfect for access to the medieval city of Carcassonne. PW, Scotland. May 2016.
Spacious, good location and comfortable for 2 couples. Pleasant garden. Mr M, Norfolk UK, October 2015.
We just wanted to say what a wonderful time we had at this apartment in Carcassonne. It was fantastic, large, beautifully furnished with a lovely garden, view of the medieval city, well located and quiet. Your pictures do not really do it justice. Thank you too for the airport transfers and for dealing with our early check in. We will definitely recommend this apartment to friends and family. AW, London, UK. October 2015.
Very good apartment - great location and a lovely sun trap of a garden. DM. Glasgow, Scotland, Sept 2015.
Excellent location between the citadel and the old bastide town, very pleasant walk along the river Aude, excellent for 14th July fireworks, spacious rooms, loved the garden, good kitchen equipment, large fridge and Nespresso coffee machine, TV satellite easy to use. Mr PD, New Zealand, July 2015.
Superb apartment - would recommed it to any-one:Just come back from a week in Carcassonne where we stayed at the excellent Beau-Séjour. I can heartily recommend it to anyone looking to stay in a superbly-located, traditional, French town-house. Firstly though, a hearty cheer for Joie De Vivre through whom we booked our stay. Sue Caddick there made an excellent job of it and the fact that we needed no contact with her during our stay is only testament to her excellent organisation. One of the owners was waiting for us at Carcassonne airport, despite the fact that we arrived early. He helped us load our bags into his large car and drove us the 15-minute trip to the apartment. He speaks some English and pointed out some useful locations as we travelled. He also provided his shuttle service at the end of the week when we came to return to the airport. The apartment is located in a very quiet street that backs onto the River Aude and overlooks the never less than impressive Cité. It is a matter of minutes from the Pont Vieux that crosses the river and leads to the Cité which is probably a 15 - 20 minute walk away. The front of the property opens up onto a street only 10 minutes walk from the Place du Géneral de Gaulle, one of the entrances into the Bastide. You pass a number of bistros and restaurants as you go; places to eat are everywhere! The Canal du Midi at the far end of the bastide is about a thirty minute walk from the apartment and close to the train station, if you want to investigate a little further afield. I cannot think how the apartment could possibly be better located. No.1 Beau-Séjour is a ground-floor apartment and has the patio and garden; a fabulous, green gem where you can either soak up the sun or hide from the height of it, depending on where you sit. It is also great for eating outside and we ate all our meals there! The room are lovely and impossible to fault; huge and airy with high-ceilings. There were 2 bedrooms, one with a double bed and another with two twin beds. For me the bed was a little firm, but my wife was fine with it. Both bedrooms had the famous French shutters which ensured they were pitch-black when we slept, and there was no noise at all from outside. There is a small laundry room just off the very well-equipped kitchen, and a second w/c beyond that. Our hosts went to the trouble of ensuring there was water, milk and orange-juice cold in the fridge for when we arrived.
Mr O - Derbyshire UK - June 2015
A taste of the real France. Very clean, great location. The hosts were fantastic. Many thanks! Mr P E, Nottinghamshire UK, 2014.
Excellent. Very French. Good standard of cleanliness. Extremely spacious. Friendly, helpful yet unobtrusive owners. Enclosed garden a bonus especially for young children. Quiet location, convenient for exploring old town on foot. Dr ES, Fife, Scotland. July 2013. Excellent ,beautiful, clean, perfect. Very Satisfied. Mrs CM, Sussex, May 2013. Well situated, clean and spacious. It was tremendously helpful that Joie de Vivre were able to arrange for us to be collected from the airport and returned there - so nice for non drivers, who are often overlooked. All questions were answered by JDV very helpfully. Ms LH, May 2013. Excellent accomodation, fully equipped and well located. The owners were obliging and helpful. Very satisfied. Mr P H, Victoria, Australia, October 2012.
Just a quick note to say how much we enjoyed staying at Apartment Beau Sejour 1 in Carcassonne. The apartment was beuatiful and we were made to feel very at home there. Everything went very smoothly. We were picked up and returned to the airport by the owners and this was very kind of them. We hope to return one day with our daughters. Thank you too, Joie de vivre, for your help and efficiency. Mrs R.F., Dorset, UK, October 2012.
We were completely satisfied with the accommodation, location and our hosts. In fact, we have said that perhaps Joie de Vivre under-sells the property. We felt that everything we needed was there. It is a much larger property than we expected with great character and decor and we enjoyed it very much. Our hosts were very kind to drop us to the train station for the next leg of our trip and we were very grateful for that with 2 small kids! Quite happy to recommend to others and indeed already have on several occasions! MK, Merseyside UK, June 2012 Lovely, light spacious appartment. Very well equipped & spotlessly clean. Located next to the river & very convenient for visiting 'La Cite'. The pick from the airport was an added bonus. We will return and we have recommended it to all our friends. Very satisfied. Mrs CB, Derbyshire, England June 2012.
We spent a week in this charming apartment in Carcassone. The welcome, meeting and orientation to the apartment were outstanding. The apartment itself is very spacious, well equipped and located a short walk to newer city of Carcassone and a short walk to Old Carcassone . Great garden to sit out in and enjoy an evening wine, secure car parking and a ground floor location were all bonuses. The owners could not be more helpful, even insisting to drive us to the local train station on our departure, rather than call a taxi for us. Would thoroughly recommend this apartment without any reservation. KM Australia April 2012
Fulfilled all expectations, very clean, spacious & well located apartment. We were very satisfied with the service, greeting & welcome & the accommodation. JDV couldn't have done more. Mrs M, Australia, April 2012 The apartment was very satisfactory. In particular, the location was excellent. Mrs B. West Midlands, UK. August 2011.
The apartment was perfect! It was beautifully decorated and the garden area was especially useful. The owners were even kind enough to come and collect us from the railway station. We were completely satisfied with our holiday here. Mrs R-A, Yorkshire, UK, August 2011.
Very nice - we were very happy with this apartment. Mr R, Tyne and Wear, June 2011.
