About the local area

The accommodation is located in the centre of the little village of Canaules, which is literally surrounded by the vines & vineyards of the wonderful Languedoc wine producing region of southern France.

If you feel like a bit of exercise there are bicycles available at the accommodation for you explore the surrounding area at your leisure.

Road traffic tends to be a lot lighter here than in many other areas of mainland Europe so generally speaking (once you take all normal precautions) cycling is a safe activity for guests of all ages.

With an average 300 days of sunshine each year you will be literally spoilt for choice when it comes to outdoor activities. Activities available nearby include Golf, Horse Riding, Fishing, Water Sports, Climbing & Hill-Walking . The CévennesNational Park with its wonderful flora & fauna is also well worth a visit.

A recent addition to the local area is the creation of a lovely, sandy, river beach at Ales, just a 15 min drive away from the apartment.  Open from the beginning of June to the end of August, there's shallow swimming, showers, beach volleyball, lifeguards, kayaking, pedal boats and more!

Some of the larger towns in the area include Anduze (11.5 km) which is known as the gateway to the Cévennes . From here you can board the old steam train which takes you through the Cévennes to St. Jean du Garde, stopping along the way to visit the famous Bambouseraie which is home to Europe’s largest bamboo collection. Anduze is a lively tourist town with many good restaurants, shops & cafe’s.

Nearby Sauve is a medieval town (12km) which has managed to retain all of its old charm. There are a number of good restaurants hidden among the narrow streets as well as 2 bars in the small town square. Celebrity residents in Sauve include the caricaturist Robert Crumb & also the famous Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts.

Ales is the closest city and it’s about a 20 minute drive away. It has all of the usual large shops & department stores you’d expect to find in a city of its size, as well as an open air market each Monday.

Other interesting cities worth visiting if time allows are Nimes with its famous Roman Amphitheatre & Montpellier which is a bright vibrant modern city which still has some wonderful old architecture & buildings.

Once in Montpellier the beaches of the Mediterranean are just a short distance away.

Uzès is famous throughout France for its huge Saturday market when the whole place literally becomes one big open air market.

Another city of interest to artists & art historians is Arles – the home for a time of Van Gogh. Arles also has some well preserved Roman ruins which are worth a visit.

Avignon with its PapalPalace was during the period from 1309 to 1377 the residence of 7 different popes – all French. As well as the PapalPalace, Avignon is also famous for its bridge – the Pont d’Avignon.
