Maison St Mariette
General Description
- What a discovery! A grand 5-bedroomed 17th century house with its own private walled garden and swimming pool, positioned on the town square of a small historic village up in the hilltops of an area of Provence which remains involved in the production of earthenware pottery known as faience.
- The property, which was built in 1609, has been restored in style by the owners (who live in a separate divided part of the house), using many of the original features, including vaulted ceilings, 400-year-old flagstones, exposed beams and bespoke wrought iron internal doors.
-
The front of the house overlooks a classic French village scene. Just picture the central fountain, lofty plane trees, local café and boulangerie while the back gives onto the most unexpected enclosed garden and pool. The walls are entwined with climbers and there is an array of Provencal plants and fruit trees.
The Local Area
-
The advantage of being in the centre of Varages means that within a couple of minutes walk you can buy your bread, sit in a café, go to a restaurant, purchase most conveniences at the local shop, perhaps admire the pottery or explore the ruined castle.
-
Here in the Var you find fantastic variation; the region consists of both mountains and sea bathed in a sunny Mediterranean climate. A 25 minute drive will bring you to a Lake, close to the village of Quinson, 11km long with banks perfect for picnics. It is part of one of the greatest tourist attractions in Provence, in fact, the Gorges du Verdon is often called the Grand Canyon of Europe due to its dramatic beauty. The region boasts 300km of shoreline with the Iles d’Hyere, Saint Tropez and Bandol being just a few well-known names worth a visit. Culture and history as well as wonderful shops can be found in Aix en Provence whose association with the artists Cezanne and Picasso is world-famous.
-
Walking, biking, boules, horse riding, tennis and wine tasting can be enjoyed locally. The nearby lakes offer climbing, white-water sports, canyoning and paragliding.
-
Most of the local villages have their own open-air markets selling fresh produce. One hour away is Cassis with its particularly renowned market.
-
The nearest supermarket is in Barjols, a 10 minute drive.
