École des Filles
General Description
-
This option of having a holiday in this designer-styled house, positioned in the heart of a medieval village is highly recommended. The cobbled alleyways of Barbentane, one of the most desirable locations in Provence, has many secrets, including École des Filles, open the door, and enter another world. A 17th century girls school has been cleverly converted by its owner, an interior designer who has merged her unique ideas with Provencal elegance.
-
Stretching out on a sun lounger in the peace and serenity of the private courtyard, swimming pool at hand and fountain gently splashing, you can hardly believe you are in the heart of a historic hamlet. Stylish rockeries, terracotta pots tumbling with colourful flowers, romantic corners for sipping a chilled glass of wine and meals al fresco…yes, even the garden has been given the magic touch.
-
Leaving the property, it will take you just a couple of minutes to walk downhill to the local cafes, the bakery for croissants and baguettes, the butcher and delicatessen. If you do not want to cook, there are several restaurants. In fact all your needs are within walking distance. A couple of minutes uphill will take you through the 13th century city gates to pine forests and natural parkland, with breathtaking views! So if you want to park the car, and put the keys away for two weeks, this is the ideal spot, except it would be a pity to miss the sites nearby.
The Local Area
-
Barbentane once a walled town, sits on a slope overlooking fertile lands. It is dominated by its ancient tower, which was constructed in 1365, and there are many points of interest here, and don’t miss the 17th chateau, still the home of the Marquis of Barbentane, which is open to the public between July and the end of September. Venturing away from the village, the festival town of Avignon is a short drive; in fact from the rooftops of Barbentane, the world-famous Palace of the Popes is clearly visible. Close by is Saint Remy de Provence famous for its Roman ruins and its famous former resident Van Gogh. Pleasure trips to the Mediterranean, the Carmargue and the hilltop villages of the Luberon are all within striking distance.
-
Walking, biking, horse riding, boules, tennis are all found locally.
-
The market in Graveson is a favourite for fresh fruit such as peaches and melons, vegetables, cheeses, and local produce. Larger markets can be found in Avignon.
-
An ample choice of restaurants can be found nearby.
-
You’ll find the nearest large supermarket just a few minutes away in the car, or 10 minutes on foot.
