The Local Area
- Limoux is an ancient, pretty, market town on the banks of the River Aude, in the department of Aude in Languedoc Roussillon and is about 25 minutes drive from Carcassonne Airport. It has everything you would imagine a southern French market town would have: a lovely main square with a big fountain, an interesting galleried arcade of shops, cafe-bars and restaurants, a Friday market, museums and concerts and events almost all year round.
- The Carnival of Limoux, known locally as the 'Fecos de Limoux', is a yearly event. It usually starts in early January and ends in mid April each year. Most of the carnival events are on Saturdays and Sundays and take place in the main square - they are very colourful and interesting with all the participants in bright local costumes. Additionally, there are other events and concerts right through the summer months e.g. Toques et Clochers..
- Limoux is famous for Blanquette de Limoux, a delicious sparkling white wine - be sure to visit a winery and try it on your next visit! It's delicious!
- Sports Facilities: include indoor and outdoor swimming pools, walking, cycling, kayaking, fishing, and in the winter months Limoux is just over 1 hour's drive from the nearest ski resort.
- Sightseeing: you are really in a great location here for visiting Carcassonne and Mirepoix, both fascinating places. In Carcassonne head for the fairytale medieval city, the Carcassonne festival in July and August, and the Christmas market in December.
- Mirepoix is one of the most stunning medieval bastide towns we have ever seen and makes for a lovely day out. For lovers of the mountains you can visit the Pyrenees and Andorra to the South and the Black Mountains to the North. For those of you interested in the history of the Cathars, there are several Cathar Castles to visit as well as Rennes-le-Chateau for those of you interested in the Holy Grail stories. The Mediterranan beaches are approximately a 90 minute drive away.
- Markets: In Limoux the market is on a Friday morning. There are other markets in Carcassonne and Mirepoix, as well as others in local villages.
- Restaurants : Limoux has many cafe-bars and restaurants just a short walk away (200 metres).
