The Local Area

  • Carcassonne has been the backdrop to a number of films such as 'Robin Hood - Prince of Thieves' and is the setting for 'Labyrinthe' the successful novel by Kate Mosse.  The medieval city is indeed a fairytale location with lots to see and do, with festivals in July and August each year, concerts by top stars, and a fabulous firework display on Bastille Day, the 14th July.  In December, in the Bastide St Louis, there's a great Christmas market. The Canal du Midi also passes through the town offering the opportunity for walks or a boat trip on this fascinating waterway built in the mid-1600's.
  • The bastide area of Carcassonne is full of interesting architecture and is rich in history dating from the 13th century. Just relax and have a coffee or a glass of wine in the sun-drenched main square enjoying the French art de vivre.
  • Activities: You can swim in the public outdoor swimming pool open in the summer months - it's just a short walk away. There's also the  'Lac de la Cavayere', a lake with a beach that's safe for swimming and nature reserve - it takes approximately 10-15 minutes by bus to get there. Strolling or cycling along the Canal du Midi watching the boats pass by is very enjoyable. Carcassonne also has a golf course if you fancy a round of golf.
  • Sightseeing: Your can certainly spend lots of time in the City itself visiting the Chateau Comtal, the ramparts, the Museums etc. If you are hiring a car, the Mediterranean beaches are less than 1 hour's drive away.  They can also be reached by train to Narbonne and then by bus to the coastal resorts.  In the region around Carcassonne you can also visit the Cathar castles, Rennes-le-Chateau, the medieval towns of Foix and Mirepoix, the giant caves at Cabrespine and Limousis, the Montagne Noir, and area of outstanding natural beauty, and the fantastic African nature reserve at Sigean.
  • Market: Carcassonne has a great market, full of colourful, local produce in Place Carnot  on a Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.
  • Restaurants:  There are many in the city to suit all budgets and tastes. Joie de Vivre can make some recommendations for you.
  • Supermarket and Shopping: The local supermarket is a 5-minute drive away and, for the ladies, both the bastide area of Carcasonne and the medieval city have some lovely, interesting and individual shops.
