Travellers to the South of France boost Eurostar Sales
2011 has already been a good year for Eurostar, with them seeing business travel sales increasing by 12% during 2010. The company have declared that between 2009 and 2010, ticket sales rose from £675.5m to £760m. The number of passengers also increased from 9.2 million to 9.5 million; this is an increase of 3%. More travellers have been travelling further than Paris and Brussels, to the South of France, Germany and the Netherlands.
Despite severe weather conditions affecting travelling, 80 to 90% of all services the week before Christmas managed to run and even took on a large number of people who were unable to catch planes due to the flight cancellations.
Eurostar have commented on the situation, saying, “This uplift [in sales] is due to the continued recovery of the business market that has been a trend through the year as well as growth in the overall number of passengers choosing high-speed rail over plane for short-haul travel in Europe.”
Eurostar are now seeing a potential to expand the company further. They are currently the sole company to run train services through the Channel Tunnel, but this may be about to change as Deutsche Bahn; the German train operator, have announced that they will be running direct services from London to Frankfurt and Amsterdam.
